Nine goals are developing positively
The sustainable development indicator system was revised and expanded in the 2025 update. The indicators are now presented according to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The indicator system has been expanded from 55 indicators to 68 indicators.
Nine of the 17 SDGs show a positive or rather positive development according to the assessment of the development of the indicators for these goals. These are Goals 1 No poverty, 3 Good health and well-being, 4 Quality education, 5 Gender equality, 7 Affordable and clean energy, 8 Decent work and economic growth, 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure, 13 Climate action and 15 Life on land. Goals 6 Clean water and sanitation, 11 Sustainable cities and communities, 16 Peace, justice and strong institutions and 17 Partnerships to achieve the goals show a neutral development. Goals 2 No hunger, 10 Reduced inequalities and 12 Sustainable consumption and production show a negative trend.
Looking at the individual indicators, 38 of the 68 indicators in the 2025 edition of the indicator system were rated positively. This means that the trend for these indicators points towards sustainability. 20 indicators had to be assessed negatively, i.e. they are moving away from sustainability. The development of seven indicators was assessed as neutral. Three indicators could not yet be assessed in terms of their development, as only one value is available.
