On Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment Sabine Monauni attended the Meeting of German-speaking Environment Ministers in Vienna. At the invitation of Federal Minister Norbert Totschnig, Federal Minister Carsten Schneider of Germany, Minister Serge Wilmes of Luxembourg, Deputy Prime Minister Sabine Monauni, and Director Katrin Schneeberger, from Switzerland, exchanged views on current challenges in environmental protection, climate action, and nature conservation.
Among other topics, the discussions focused on the impact of geopolitical developments on climate protection. The participants noted that global crises, economic uncertainties, and energy supply issues are increasingly influencing environmental and climate policy. At the same time, they emphasized that ambitious climate protection is a central pillar of stability, security, and sustainable development.
Another key focus was the further development of climate protection measures at the European and national levels. Particular attention was given to instruments such as emissions trading and the implementation of national climate targets. The participants underscored the importance of public acceptance and practical solutions for the successful implementation of climate policy.
The meeting also served to prepare for important international conferences, particularly the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) and the Conference on Biological Diversity (COP17). It was emphasized that future efforts should focus more strongly on the concrete implementation of existing goals and on mobilizing sufficient financial resources.
In addition, other topics such as the promotion of biodiversity, the bioeconomy, and the ongoing international negotiations on a global plastics agreement were discussed. The importance of cross-border cooperation, for example within the framework of the Alpine Convention, was also emphasized.
“The annual meeting provides a valuable platform for open dialogue on key environmental issues and strengthens close cooperation among German-speaking countries,” emphasized Sabine Monauni. The next meeting of German-speaking environment ministers will take place in Switzerland in 2027.
