New passport from the beginning of February 2026

The new Liechtenstein passport can be applied for from Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Migration and Passport Office (MPO) in Vaduz and then taken away immediately. The "old passports" will remain valid until the end of their respective validity period. The fees remain unchanged. In addition to the regular passport, the special passports - diplomatic passport, service passport, passport for foreigners and the travel document for recognized refugees - have also been revised.

The new passport introduces additional security features that increase protection against counterfeiting and misuse. The most significant change concerns the passport design: a repetitive or uniform page layout no longer corresponds to today's standard. Instead, each page of modern passports is unique, which makes forgery much more difficult. In addition to the security-related adjustments, the passport has also been visually modernized. The design is based on the winning project by Anikó Stalder (kefi creations gmbh, Triesen), which was selected as part of the 2023 public design competition.

The individually illustrated inner pages - incorporating all of the country's municipalities - show scenic, cultural and historical motifs of Liechtenstein and combine modern security features with a clear reference to national identity. This makes the passport not only a secure travel document, but also a "piece of home to take home". Minister Hubert Büchel summarizes this as follows: "The new passport is an expression of a Liechtenstein that is both tradition-conscious and modern - secure, efficient and internationally networked. It combines innovation with national identity and is symbolic of a country that is aware of its values and at the same time looks to the future with an open mind."

In addition to the design changes, functional changes have also been made. For example, instead of the previous "Size" entry, the "Place of birth" will now be listed, which corresponds to the standard for most countries in the European Economic Area (EEA). The indication of the place of birth increases the international usability of the document, as this is an important means of identification for travel, official transactions and legal transactions.

The data page is now made of a thin polycarbonate and no longer of a paper-cotton mixture. Due to this change, the printer infrastructure must also be replaced. Devices that can print using both laser and ink are now being used. This change means that additional security and design elements can be integrated. On the first paper page of the passport, for example, the facial image of the data page is repeated as a so-called "letter screen image". The facial image consists of tiny letters and numbers containing the passport holder's surname and first name as well as the passport number.

With the introduction of the new passport, Liechtenstein is taking a further step in the ongoing modernization of its government services. The document combines the highest security standards with a unique, identity-creating design, thereby strengthening the country's international visibility.
