The new European Entry and Exit System (EES) will be launched on October 12th

The Entry-Exit System (EES) is a central European information system that electronically records the entry and exit of third-country nationals at the Schengen external borders. With the introduction of the EES, the previous manual passport stamps will gradually be replaced by a digital procedure. All third-country nationals who wish to travel to the Schengen area for a short-term tourist stay of a maximum of 90 days within 180 days are affected.

At its meeting on September 30, 2025, the government adopted the Ordinance on the Entry and Exit System (Entry and Exit System Ordinance, EESO) and the Ordinance on the Amendment of the Ordinance on Entry and Visa Issuance (VEO). The ordinances will enter into force on October 12, 2025, thus completing the legal basis for the introduction of the new system.

In future, the following data will be recorded electronically for persons exempt from visa requirements when entering or leaving the Schengen area: Personal and travel document data, date and place of entry or exit as well as biometric data (facial image and four fingerprints). This data is taken directly from the Visa Information System (VIS) for persons requiring a visa and supplemented with the missing data in the EES.

The EES makes it easier to check the permitted length of stay of third-country nationals and supports the fight against illegal residence and cross-border crime. The data collected is stored in a central system throughout the EU and is available to the competent authorities for the legally defined purposes. In Liechtenstein, the EES is used by the Foreigners and Passport Office (full access) and the National Police (queries).

The national implementation of the EES in Liechtenstein was launched as a project in 2019 and is part of the Schengen-wide introduction. The project responsibility for the national implementation lies with the Foreigners and Passport Office. The Office of Information Technology and the National Police are also involved in the project. The project costs are almost entirely refinanced by EU funds (ISF Borders and BMVI).

Further information on the EES can be found on the official website of the European Commission at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/de/ees and on the website of the Immigration and Passport Office.
