At its meeting on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the government took note of the report by the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) on subsidies that have a detrimental effect on biodiversity. The report serves as a basis for the implementation of the international Kunming-Montreal Agreement of the Convention on Biological Diversity, to which Liechtenstein is a signatory. At the same time, it fulfills one of the objectives of the National Biodiversity Action Plan 2030+.
A total of 52 subsidies in the areas of agriculture, transport, energy, urban development, tourism and leisure, and forestry were identified as having a negative impact on biodiversity. The relevant departments of the national administration are now tasked with demonstrating by the end of 2026 whether and how these subsidies can be reduced, converted, or abolished. In accordance with the Biodiversity Action Plan 2030+ and the requirements of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the goal is to make subsidies biodiversity-friendly by 2030.
The report is available on the state administration's website under the publications of the Office for the Environment (Biodiversity).
