On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Ambassador Martin Frick, Head of the Office for Foreign Affairs, and Isabel Frommelt, Liechtenstein's Ambassador to Germany, opened the new Liechtenstein Honorary Consulate in Düsseldorf. The event was attended by numerous high-ranking guests, including representatives of large and medium-sized German companies and public figures. At the opening ceremony, the new Honorary Consul Stephan Eilers was ceremoniously inaugurated. He has been associated with Liechtenstein for many years. As a partner in an internationally renowned law firm, he brings with him specific knowledge of the German and Liechtenstein legal systems and economy.
In addition to Düsseldorf, Liechtenstein has two other honorary consulates in Germany, in Hamburg and Munich. The opening of the new office in Düsseldorf is intended to further strengthen Liechtenstein's multifaceted relations with Germany. As the government center of the most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Düsseldorf is an important hub for trade and industry. Liechtenstein industry is represented with eight locations in NRW.
During the opening ceremony, Head of Office Frick and Ambassador Frommelt-Gottschald emphasized the important role of the honorary consulates in promoting Liechtenstein's image abroad: "With their networks, the honorary consuls make an important contribution to promoting Liechtenstein as a business and education location." The core tasks of the honorary consuls include public relations work and location promotion.
Political relations between Germany and Liechtenstein are characterized by close bilateral contacts. There are regular exchanges at government level, particularly in the areas of foreign policy and economic, domestic and financial policy. Liechtenstein also maintains close relations with the German federal states. Germany is one of Liechtenstein's most important economic partners.
