The Office of the Environment and the Office of Building and Spatial Planning have commissioned climate analysis maps for Liechtenstein, which will initially be published on the country's geodata portal. They will be made available to municipalities as an important planning tool and to interested members of the public. This will further contribute to climate-adapted spatial planning and improve the quality of life in the country.
They represent an important basis for future-oriented spatial planning in Liechtenstein, as the country is particularly affected by climate change due to its alpine location. Rising average temperatures are increasingly leading to so-called heat islands in the settlement areas of the valley region. In order to address these challenges in a targeted manner, six new analysis maps have been created that show the climatic conditions during the day and at night in detail.
The maps show not only the areas that are particularly overheated during the day, but also the areas where cold air forms on the slopes and in the agricultural valley areas near the settlements. Directional arrows show the nighttime cold air flows toward the settlement areas—a crucial indication for future construction developments. In this way, the natural temperature balance between the heated valley floor and cool slopes can also be ensured in the long term.
