In spring 2025, the nationwide black grouse census was once again carried out in Liechtenstein. This is organized every two years by the Office for the Environment in close cooperation with Liechtenstein hunters. This periodic census serves to systematically document the population and distribution of black grouse and forms the basis for a sustainable hunting and nature conservation policy.
In 2025, a total of 109 animals were counted, including 91 black grouse and 18 black hens. In comparison, the total result in 2023 was 111 animals. In previous years, the total number of black grouse was usually between 80 and 110 individuals.
As in the previous surveys, there is a clear dominance of cocks over hens. This is due to the fact that the count takes place during the mating season, when the males are particularly active and highly visible. The lower number of hens recorded therefore does not necessarily mean that the population is actually lower. The data collected makes it possible to identify changes in the wild population at an early stage and introduce targeted measures to preserve species diversity. Overall, the black grouse population in Liechtenstein remains stable despite natural fluctuations - a positive sign for local biodiversity and the success of existing conservation measures.
The Office for the Environment would like to thank all participants for their commitment and valuable support in recording the black grouse population.
