Asian bush mosquito still present – no tiger mosquitoes detected

The Office of the Environment has published its final report on mosquito monitoring for 2025. Fortunately, no eggs from the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) were detected during monitoring this year. This means that Liechtenstein has been free of tiger mosquitoes since 2019, when one was last found in the country, and no population has been able to establish itself so far.

The Asian bush mosquito (Aedes japonicus), on the other hand, remains clearly present in the Liechtenstein valley region. A total of over 9,700 eggs were counted in the 24 egg-laying traps set up. Although the number of positive traps and the egg density were below the 2024 level, they were above the long-term average.

Monitoring took place between June and September 2025 and focused on residential areas and locations with an increased risk of introduction. Monitoring is also planned for the coming years to ensure early detection and containment of invasive mosquito species.

The final report is published on the state administration's website (www.llv.li) in the section for private individuals under “Recreation, Environment & Animal Husbandry” under Neobiota.
