Permanent population 40,886 persons
On December 31, 2024, the total population of Liechtenstein, i.e. the permanent and non-permanent population, amounted to 41,398 people. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 1.0%. The proportion of the permanent population is 98.8% and that of the non-permanent population is 1.2%.
The 2.2% increase in the permanent population to 40,886 people and, in particular, the number of foreign nationals in the permanent population, which at 14,368 people is 4.7% higher than in the previous year, are striking. On the other hand, the non-permanent population on December 31, 2024 is 47.6% lower than in the previous year at 512 people. The main reason for these shifts is the adjusted, new population definition that will be used from the 2024 reporting year. More detailed information on the changes to the definition and the impact on the population figures can be found in the document on methodology and quality in this publication and in the special publication comparing the new and old population definition as at December 31, 2023. A summary of the changes can be found under Methodology and quality in the "Fact sheet on the adjustment of the population definition".
Compared to the previous year, the working permanent population increased from 20,786 persons to 20,865 persons as at December 31, 2024. The proportion of employed persons in the total permanent population is 51.0%.
