Demographic change means that there are more and more older people in Liechtenstein. Projections indicate that by 2050, the population of those over 60 will increase by about 50 percent, while the total population will grow by only 12 percent. This trend also presents challenges for society, politics, and Economic Affairs Division.

In 2023, the government developed an aging strategy for Liechtenstein with the goal of maintaining the quality of life for all residents into old age in the face of demographic and societal change (Aging Strategy, p. 2). To this end, various areas of action and corresponding measures were defined. One of the measures outlined in the strategy is the creation of a dedicated office for aging issues within the National Administration. This was implemented in July 2026.

The Senior Citizens’ Specialist serves as a coordinator and central point of contact. She is the point of contact for questions and concerns from service providers, municipal coordination offices, and other relevant stakeholders in the field of aging. Their responsibilities also include networking with various stakeholders, promoting dialogue among them, and creating appropriate platforms for this purpose. In addition, they are responsible, together with the «Aging Strategy» Steering Committee, for monitoring the implementation of the aging strategy.

Providing advice and information to seniors and their family members remains the responsibility of the relevant agencies.

Within the Office of Social Services, the Senior Citizens Specialist is organizationally assigned to the Equal Opportunity Division.
