Total energy consumption and imports fell by 3.1% to 1,110,175 MWh in 2024. Per capita consumption decreased by 1.6 MWh to 27.1 MWh.
Electricity consumption increased by 2.1% compared to the previous year. Sales of heating oil in Liechtenstein fell by 11.7%. Natural gas fell by 3.8% and biogas by 10.0%. The energy source district heating from waste increased by 9.1%. An increase of 14.3% was recorded for wood as an energy source. Diesel fell by 8.0% compared to the previous year. Petrol consumption in 2024 fell back to the 2022 level after a sharp increase in 2023. In a further survey of the larger filling station operators on the reasons for the increase in the 2023 data by the Office for the Environment, no conclusive explanation could be found. An increase in petrol consumption was also observed in Switzerland in 2023, but to a lesser extent than in Liechtenstein.
The share of energy supply from domestic energy resources in the total energy supply increased from 14.8% to 16.7% in 2024. Energy production from domestic resources amounted to 185,307 MWh.
