Passport exchange

A review has revealed that one of the electronic certificates on the chip of the Liechtenstein passport does not fully meet current requirements, which is why the certificate must be blocked by the Migration and Passport Office as a precautionary measure. This affects around 5,500 passports that were issued between April 29, 2015 and January 11, 2018. The cause has been localized and rectified in cooperation with the external suppliers.

The passports of the affected series are still valid until the regular expiry date and can be used for border crossings. However, the functionality of the passport could be limited to the extent that the use of e-gates may not be possible or only possible with difficulty in many cases. The Migration and Passport Office will write to all affected passport holders over the next few months and inform them about the passport exchange process. People who travel a lot or regularly use e-Gates are advised not to wait for the information letter and to make the exchange quickly.

The replacement is free of charge for those affected. The costs are covered by external suppliers. As fingerprints taken to create the passport may only be stored for a maximum of 30 days for data protection reasons, this data is no longer available and a personal appearance at the Migration and Passport Office counter is required. The replacement passport is created on the basis of the existing data record and is provided with the current date of issue and the expiry date of the previous passport

The Migration and Passport Office deeply regrets this measure and the associated inconvenience for those affected
