FAQ

Is the UID mandatory in Liechtenstein?

In principle not; exceptions are economic activities in the Principality of Liechtenstein that are subject to Swiss customs law applicable in LI as well as the entities mentioned in Article 3c UIDG. Nevertheless, the UID can also be a necessary requirement for numerous other business transactions with and in Switzerland. Liechtenstein companies can apply for a UID on a voluntary basis. This is recommended.

What happens if I do not apply for a UID?

This depends on the business being transacted. Within Liechtenstein, this has no effect. Numerous transactions with or in Switzerland can no longer be conducted without a UID.

What does the UID cost and how long is it valid?

The UID is free of charge. The UID is unique and has no expiration date.

Can I also use the UID for identification in Liechtenstein?

In dealings with the Liechtenstein national administration, the UID is not used to identify companies. For this purpose, there is the PEID. Using the UID in the B2B area represents a business decision (e.g. in the context of customer management).

Does the UID replace my VAT number?

No. The five-digit Liechtenstein VAT number is still valid.

Does the UID replace my commercial register number?

No. The FL company index registration number (Liechtenstein commercial register number) is still valid.

How and where do I obtain a UID?

Fill out the application form for the Swiss UID. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) will assign your company a UID and then send it to you in writing by mail.

For further information on the UID as well as its issuance, the Office of Statistics (AS) is at your disposal (T: +423 236 69 37 / lur@llv.li).
