Nature conservation in the forest

The Liechtenstein forest is a comparatively near-natural ecosystem that serves as a habitat for many plant and animal species. Three concrete implementation strategies are available for the preservation and promotion of species and habitat diversity:

  • Natural silviculture as a basic use
Site-appropriate tree species mix; staggered forest regeneration; protection of forest soil during timber harvesting; regeneration-tolerant wildlife populations.
  • Creation of forest reserves and special forest areas
Undisturbed, dynamic forest development; preservation of old management forms; targeted promotion of endangered species.
  • Creation of valuable small habitats
Promotion of old and dead wood; promotion of rare tree and shrub species; creation of light- and structure-rich pioneer phases; upgrading of forest edges, natural reforestation of storm and clearing areas.

In Liechtenstein today, a total of 1,280 ha are designated as forest reserves and 555 ha as special forest areas. This corresponds to about 27% of the total forest area, which is to be classified as very high in international comparison.
