Naturalization

Acquiring Liechtenstein citizenship

In principle, a distinction can be made between five different ways to acquire Liechtenstein citizenship:

  • By birth (§ 4 LGBl. 1996 No. 124)
Children of a Liechtenstein mother or father acquire Liechtenstein citizenship. This also applies in principle to adopted children (adoption in lieu of a child).
  • Naturalization in the ordinary procedure (§ 6 LGBl. 2008 No. 306)
Naturalization in the ordinary procedure is carried out by admission to the municipal citizenship, which is decided by the municipal citizens residing in the municipality in a vote. The applicant must have been a regular resident of Liechtenstein for ten years and renounce his previous citizenship.
  • Naturalization as a result of marriage (§ 5 LGBl. 2008 No. 306)
The most important prerequisite for this is that the applicant has been married to a Liechtenstein citizen or the applicant has been married to a Liechtenstein citizen for at least five years, has the ordinary residence in Liechtenstein and renounces the previous citizenship.
  • Naturalization as a result of registered partnership (§ 5 LGBl. 2008 No. 306)
The most important prerequisite for this is that the applicant lives with a Liechtenstein citizen in a registered partnership for at least five years, has ordinary residence in Liechtenstein and renounces the previous citizenship.
  • Naturalization as a result of longer-term residence (§ 5a LGBl. 2008 No. 306)
For naturalization as a result of longer-term residence, a regular residence in Liechtenstein of 30 years is required, whereby the years up to the age of 20 are counted twice. The applicant must renounce his previous citizenship.
  • Naturalization as a result of statelessness (§ 5b LGBl. 2008 No. 306)
For naturalization due to statelessness, a regular residence in Liechtenstein of five years is required. You were born in the country, have been stateless since birth, and have not yet reached the age of 21.
