Roaming

Roaming (English for "wandering") is the use of a SIM card with a Liechtenstein phone number (+423) in foreign mobile networks. For this purpose, Liechtenstein mobile operators must conclude roaming contracts with the foreign mobile operators. This allows the Liechtenstein customer to make calls, send SMS or use mobile Internet access abroad. Billing for connections abroad (roaming charges) is handled by the Liechtenstein mobile operator according to the tariff or subscription.

Please note the following advice and recommendations when using mobile services abroad:

Calling abroad

There are basically two cases here:

1) You call from abroad -  so-called "active roaming":

The call is in each case set up by the foreign network operator and billed to your Liechtenstein mobile operator. You pay your Liechtenstein mobile operator for the roaming calls made.

2) You are called abroad - so-called "passive roaming":

In contrast to domestic calls, you may also incur costs for passive calls.

SMS abroad

Sending SMS abroad is subject to charges. The pure reception of SMS does not entail any further costs.

Mobile mailbox (voicemail) abroad

When abroad, especially the call forwarding to the mobile box can be very expensive. Before you go abroad, ask your operator about the setting options and costs of the mobile mailbox.

Mobile data services abroad

The use of mobile data services outside the European Economic Area (EEA = EU + Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland) requires special caution regarding the possible costs. For the data units consumed, very high charges may be provided for in the tariff regulations of the mobile operators, e.g. 10 francs per megabyte. Any existing monthly included data volume may not apply in other EEA countries. In addition, certain configurations on the smartphone or notebook, such as automatic update services, even in the background, can cause high roaming costs without being noticed. Before going abroad, it is therefore advisable to find out about roaming costs and check the configurations on the terminal used. There are often also alternative and cheaper options, such as the use of WLAN in the hotel or Internet cafes.

Tips for roaming abroad

Be sure to check with your operator about charges for phone calls, text messages and data services before you go abroad. With most providers, passive roaming, that is, when you are called, is cheaper than active roaming.

General rules, which result from the EU Roaming Regulation and are worldwide valid:

1. data roaming:

Each operator must offer and guarantee a cost limit at a maximum of 50 euros (excl. VAT) - the equivalent of about 60 francs. Alternatively, the operator can also provide other maximum limits for selection. Once this limit is set, the operator may not charge more than the selected limit without the customer's intervention. After consumption of 80% of the maximum amount as well as when the maximum amount is reached, the customer must be informed in each case. The information must contain details of what the customer must do to continue using data roaming.

2. roaming information SMS:

The operator must automatically send the end customer a personalized tariff information message as soon as the customer enters another country. This message must include the cost of calls, SMS and data roaming. This information SMS can be cancelled at any time free of charge or also ordered again.

These two regulations apply worldwide  - except roaming on airplanes and ships!
