Metrology - gauges and prepackages

Consumers trust that quantities of goods you buy and pay for are measured correctly.

Measuring ensures that legally regulated measuring devices such as scales in sales outlets, volume measuring devices at fuel dispensers, spatial measurements for serving vessels in restaurants, etc., may be placed on the market.

Measuring instruments are controlled by market surveillance, verification of measurement stability (e.g. recalibration) and inspection. Responsible for the controls of measuring instruments is the Weights and Measures Office FL+1.

The Weights and Measures Office FL+1 is also responsible for monitoring compliance with the provisions of the Quantitative Indication Ordinance.

If new measuring equipment is purchased for the sale of goods, it must be reported to the relevant weights and measures office. This does not apply to serving vessels and drinking glasses.

The following obligations must be complied with in addition to the reporting obligation:

  • Keep the manufacturer's technical documentation and declaration of conformity
  • Ensure that the measuring equipment complies with the legal requirements
  • Make sure that the recalibration is done in due time

Note: Newly placed on the market measuring instruments do not bear a calibration mark until the first recalibration.

Companies that manufacture or import prepackaged goods must comply with the provisions of the Mengenangabeverordnung  (SR 941.204

This includes, in particular, provisions on prepackage labeling, testing procedures, requirements for bulk container bottles, and responsibilities of the manufacturer or importer.
