Customs - optimally networked in the middle of two economic areas

Liechtenstein is an export country. The future lies in exports. By means of various agreements, Liechtenstein has created optimal conditions for the export-oriented economy. Thanks to EEA accession and customs union with Switzerland, the Principality has the unrestricted opportunity to operate in both markets with a total of more than 500 million people.

Since 1995, Liechtenstein has been part of the European Economic Area (EEA). Companies benefit from the advantages of the EU/EEA internal market, the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital. A special regulation on the free movement of persons and the freedom of establishment takes into account Liechtenstein's special geographical situation.

The Principality is also a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)and thus benefits from one of the largest networks of concluded free trade agreements worldwide. Since the 1923 Customs Treaty with Switzerland, Liechtenstein has been part of the Swiss customs territory and uses the Swiss franc as its currency. Liechtenstein is connected to the Swiss customs territory. Through this treaty, all free trade agreements concluded bilaterally with Switzerland also apply to Liechtenstein.
