The fingerprint identification system EURODAC (European Dactyloscopy) is an EU-wide database in which the fingerprints of asylum seekers and irregular migrants are stored. By comparing fingerprints against the EURODAC database, it can be determined whether asylum seekers or foreign nationals who are unlawfully present in a member state's territory have previously applied for asylum in another member state, or whether asylum seekers have entered a member state irregularly.
The EURODAC system has been in operation since 2003. In 2013, a new legal framework was introduced. Since then, law enforcement authorities have also been permitted to query the system for the purposes of preventing, detecting, or investigating terrorist offences and other serious crimes.
As part of the implementation of the EU’s new Asylum and Migration Pact in Liechtenstein, EURODAC was enhanced and expanded in 2026. The new EURODAC system became operational in June 2026.
