High School
Admission to secondary school occurs after students complete the fifth grade of elementary school. Approximately 25 percent of students in each grade attend secondary school. Secondary school is a general education institution that offers different levels of academic challenge and covers grades six through nine. It prepares students, in particular, for the workforce or for the transition to a Realschule. Small class sizes and individualized instruction allow for a differentiated approach to each student’s learning needs.
The following required subjects are taught at the Oberschule: German, mathematics, computer science, social studies, English, home economics, textile and technical design, religion and culture, music, visual arts, life skills, project-based learning, and physical education. In addition, a wide range of elective courses is offered, such as geometric drawing, Italian, Spanish, or French.
Students with learningdifficulties receive support through specialeducational measures or enhanced special education services (special education).
To prepare students for the smoothest possible transition from lower secondary school to upper secondary education programs, the 9th grade is structured on a more individualized basis. The focus of the school program on the needs of each individual student is determined during a progress conference between parents, the student, and the teacher in the spring of the 8th grade.
Through the homeroom teacher, all students have a mentor who supports them in choosing a career and in many other areas. Students who successfully complete high school have the optionof enrolling in a voluntary 10th grade.
