Preschool
Kindergarten is the traditional form of preschool education. Children must be four years old by the time they enter kindergarten. Attendance at kindergarten is free of charge. Kindergarten complements and supports the child’s education and upbringing within the family. The child’s development is fostered in a holistic manner. The curriculum for the Principality of Liechtenstein is mandatory for kindergarten. Particular emphasis is placed on social education and character development, language, math, sensory and motor skills training, musical and rhythmic education, and the arts.
Kindergarten typically lasts two years. For children whose native language is not German, the second year of kindergarten is mandatory.
Registration for kindergarten takes place upon enrollment. The enrollment date is announced in the national newspapers, on the municipal television channel, on the national television channel, and in the Official Gazette of the Liechtenstein National Administration (www.amtsblatt.llv.li). In addition, parents receive an informational letter with the enrollment form at the end of February. The form must be completed and returned to the school administration of the municipality of residence by the enrollment deadline.
Students with learning difficulties receive support through special educational measures or enhanced special education services (special education).
Further information on kindergarten enrollment can be found in the brochure “Enrollment in Kindergarten—Information for Parents.”
