Adjustment of radio frequency rights in the 2.1 GHz frequency band
The Office of Communications is currently reviewing the adjustment of radio frequency rights in the 2.1 GHz frequency band and is giving interested parties the opportunity to submit comments on this matter.
Following the amendment to ECC Decision (06)01, adopted on 7 March 2025, the harmonised frequency plan in the 2.1 GHz FDD frequency band was adjusted. The revision redefines the frequency block boundaries and no longer mandates the margin protection distances previously required at the edges of the frequency band. For this reason, the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has widened the frequency blocks in the Swiss 2.1 GHz frequency band from 4.8 MHz to a full 5 MHz with effect from 1 January 2026. As a result of this change, the band limits currently allocated in Liechtenstein to each mobile network operator within the 2.1 GHz frequency band no longer correspond to those in Switzerland, which could lead to an increased risk of interference at the border with Switzerland. There are no apparent reasons why Liechtenstein should not also implement the same expansion to full 5 MHz blocks as in Switzerland. Indeed, a switch to full 5 MHz blocks has the advantage that Liechtenstein’s mobile network operators can also benefit from greater spectrum efficiency, whilst reducing the potential for interference at the national border.
The amendment decision (in German), which is intended for existing holders of spectrum usage rights in the 2.1 GHz frequency band, is published here to give holders and other interested parties the opportunity to submit comments.
The Office of Communications welcomes comments until 30 October 2026. Comments should be sent by email to info.ak@llv.li or via the form for secure data transmission to the Office of Communications.
