Minister Hubert Büchel traveled to Vienna for an inaugural visit on Wednesday, March 19, 2026. Meetings were held with the Austrian Minister of Home Affairs, Gerhard Karner, and the State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport, Michaela Schmidt.
In talks with Minister of Home Affairs Gerhard Karner, Minister Büchel praised the close relations between Austria and Liechtenstein and the good cooperation in the area of security. The exchange also focused on current migration issues, in particular the migration and asylum pact, as well as greater involvement of the associated states of the Schengen area in Europol.
At the meeting with State Secretary Michaela Schmidt, the focus was on cooperation in the field of sport and the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to the Paralympic Games as well as the handling of major international events in North America such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. Possible collaborations in the Lake Constance region were also discussed.
In honor of Minister Hubert Büchel, Ambassador Simon Biedermann hosted a lunch with Austrian experts from the field of security policy, at which current topics were discussed in greater depth.
