The results report for “Check Your Knowledge” for the 2025 calendar year provides a comprehensive overview of student achievement in Liechtenstein. The assessment data show that results in mathematics and English have remained consistently at a good level since 2023 across all tested grade levels and competency areas. Performance in German is stable in grades 7 and 9. In grade 3, however, results have shown a decline since 2023, particularly in the “Language in Focus” area. Students with German as their first language achieve better results in all tested subjects and grade levels than those with a different first language. The differences are particularly pronounced in grades 7 and 9.

A total of 1,109 students in grades 3, 7th, and 9th grades—that is, at the end of their respective cycles according to the Liechtenstein Curriculum (LiLe)—took the “Check Your Knowledge” assessments in German, mathematics, and English in May and September 2025. The Institute for Educational Evaluation (IBE) in Zurich was responsible for developing the tasks, administering the tests, and evaluating the results.

Participants and Tested Competency Areas

In German, participating students from all three grade levels were tested in the two competency areas “Reading” and “Language in Focus”; in mathematics, they were tested in the three competency areas “Shape and Space,” “Measurement, Functions, Data, and Probability,” and “Numbers and Variables.” The 7th and 9th-grade classes also took tests in the competency areas “Listening” and “Reading” in the English Bureau. A slight majority of all participating students were male (52.6%). The proportion of participants whose first language was not German was 31.7%. Of the participating children and adolescents in lower secondary school, 31.0% attended an Oberschule, 37.4% a Realschule, and 31.6% a Gymnasium.

Consistent and Strong Results in Mathematics and English

In mathematics, a stable and high level of performance is evident across all tested competency areas. In all three Checks grade levels, students’ mean scores in all three competency areas have remained very consistent since 2023. The Bureau of English is tested in grades 7 and 9. Since 2023, consistently stable and positive results have been achieved in the two assessed skill areas, “Listening” and “Reading”—the average scores for both grade levels have remained at a high level across all three years.

German: Stable Results at the End of Grades 7 and 9

In German, the results reports since 2023 document a stable level of performance in grades 7 and 9 in the assessed competency areas “Reading” and “Language in Focus.” The reports show that the variation in performance among the results after Cycle 1 is greater in German than in the other tested subject bureaus: The German results are the most striking of all the Checks results, as the average score has been declining since 2023 in both the “Reading” and “Language in Focus” competency areas.

First Language as a Clearly Documented Influencing Factor

All “Check Your Knowledge” results reports since 2023 have identified significant performance differences between students with German as their first language and those with a different first language: The corresponding results show higher scores for students with German as their first language across all tested competency areas and grade levels. The differences are particularly pronounced at the end of 7th and 9th grade.

Positive Feedback in the 2025 Survey

The “School for All” survey, conducted in 2025 as part of “Check Your Knowledge,” reveals predominantly positive feedback from students in the areas of well-being, safety, fairness, social relationships, participation, as well as learning and individual support. The analysis reveals particularly encouraging results in the areas of friendships, helpfulness, and safety. In nearly all areas, this is even more evident in the lower grade levels than in the higher ones.

Outlook

The results will be analyzed and discussed together with school administrators in workshop settings. The goal is to apply the insights gained to the development of instruction, schools, and quality.
