Sustainable Development Indicators Updated

Ten goals are showing positive progress

Following last year’s revision and expansion of the sustainable development indicator system, the 2026 update added another 7 indicators, bringing the total from 68 to 75.

According to the assessment of the indicators for these goals, ten of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are showing positive or somewhat positive trends. These are Goals 1 No Poverty, 3 Good Health and Well-being, 4 Quality Education, 5 Gender Equality, 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, 7 Affordable and Clean Energy, 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 13 Climate Action, and 15 Life on Land. Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) show neutral progress. A negative trend is evident in Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Goal 14 (Life Below Water) is not assessed for Liechtenstein.

When considering the individual indicators, 47 of the 75 indicators in the 2026 edition of the indicator system show a positive assessment. This means that the trend for these indicators is moving toward sustainability. Twenty-one indicators are rated negatively; they are moving away from sustainability. Four indicators have a neutral rating for their development. Three indicators could not yet be assessed in terms of their development, as only one value is currently available. In the 2026 update, new data was available for 39 indicators.
