Drought: Water withdrawals for agriculture will be restricted

Due to the ongoing drought, water levels in watercourses continue to drop. Since no sufficient rainfall is expected in the coming days and today’s rain is not enough to alleviate the situation in the long term, the Office of Environment has decided to impose additional restrictions on water withdrawal for the irrigation of agricultural crops. This affects water bodies that are particularly dependent on rainfall. In these water bodies, the flow has decreased significantly once again, and in shallow sections, the flow velocity has dropped sharply. As a result, water temperatures are also rising, which poses an additional stress factor, particularly for fish.

Water withdrawals are no longer permitted from the following watercourses:
- Esche, including all tributaries
- Scheidgraba, including all tributaries
- Spiersbach, including tributaries up to the confluence with the Möhlibach

Existing restrictions apply to:
- Oberaubach / Kappelebach
- Schmettakanal up to its confluence with the Spiersbach

It is likely that water levels in other watercourses—particularly smaller ones—are also below the thresholds specified in the information sheet “Water Withdrawals from Watercourses” (www.llv.li). Accordingly, water withdrawals are not permitted from any of these watercourses either.

The Office of Environment is continuously assessing the situation and will provide updates as needed.
