For the fourth time, the Liechtenstein Ski Association (LSV) and Liechtenstein School Sports organized the school ski championships in the Schneeflucht in Malbun. In glorious weather and perfect piste conditions, 64 pupils from primary 3 to 5 and secondary 1 and 2 from various municipalities in Liechtenstein performed impressively, setting a new record for the number of participants, which the organizers were particularly pleased about.
"Beat the Star" - a competition with tradition
Under the popular motto "Beat the Star", the young racers ventured onto the giant slalom course. The time to be beaten was set by none other than Robert Büchel, the current head of Bergbahnen Malbun and former participant in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. However, his starting time of 35.82 seconds did not hold up until the end: several students beat it with ease, thus joining Robert in the cherished tradition of "beaten stars". So far, none of the invited personalities has managed to become the fastest of the day.
The fastest female student was Julia Frei in an impressive 34.49 seconds. Ian Ruhe took the lead in the boys' race with an outstanding 31.45 seconds. Both athletes are members of the LSV youth squad.
The fine chocolate medals from the Wanger bakery and beautiful gifts from Schulsports Liechtenstein made for beaming faces in the finish area. The complete results can be found in the appendix.
Pure speed: the speed measuring track
After the giant slalom, the LSV coaching team also set up a speed measurement course. Full of excitement, the students wanted to find out how fast they really are on skis - and some achieved impressive results. The magic 70 km/h mark was even surpassed several times.
Julia Frei proved her speed here too: she broke through the light barrier at 74.26 km/h. Ian Ruhe went one better and reached a sensational 79.40 km/h. Robert Büchel achieved 67.54 km/h - but took it with a lot of humor and a big smile.
A heartfelt thank you
Many thanks to all the dedicated helpers, the Liechtenstein School Sport, the entire LSV team, the Malbun mountain railroads and especially this year's "star" Robert Büchel. We would also like to thank the numerous pupils and their teachers for their participation and the great atmosphere.
We are already looking forward to the fifth edition of the school ski championships in 2027!
