With Liechtenstein’s accession to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Office of Statistics was tasked by the government with further developing macroeconomic statistics. A key focus of this effort is the modernization of the System of National Accounts (SNA). This includes, among other things, methodological improvements, the integration of new data sources, and technical adjustments to production processes. As part of an IMF technical assistance visit in June 2026, methodological adjustments for the National Accounts were developed, and the Office of Statistics established a multi-stage revision program to incorporate these adjustments into its statistical production. The results of the technical assistance visit will be published in a final report prepared by the IMF.
The planned methodological adjustments to Liechtenstein’s National Accounts will be implemented in phases. The first changes will be implemented for the reporting years 2023 and 2024 and published on November 27, 2026, in accordance with the publication schedule. Further changes are expected to be implemented in the following years, up to and including the 2027 reporting year, and will be applied retroactively to the time series through 2023. The adjustments will affect key indicators such as gross domestic product, gross national income, and national income.
Temporarily, a break in the time series will occur between the 2022 and 2023 reporting years during the phased implementation. For the 2023 reporting year, the National Accounts will also be compiled using the previous method for comparative purposes. Differences between the old and new methods will be documented in a detailed revision analysis. As soon as the technical requirements are met, consistent time series extending further back in time will be published.
The goal of the revisions is to improve the quality of Liechtenstein’s economic indicators and their international comparability through methodological adjustments and the use of new data sources. Periodic revisions of the National Accounts are standard practice in most countries and follow international guidelines. Through phased implementation, Liechtenstein is moving closer to these standards with the goal of meeting them in the long term.
More detailed information on the revisions is available in the Liechtenstein National Accounts Revision Program:
