As at December 31, 2023, 40,992 people had a registered place of residence in Liechtenstein. Of these, 40,015 people were counted as part of the permanent population. 977 people belonged to the non-permanent population. This - purely statistical - category includes people who are only expected to stay in Liechtenstein temporarily. For many analyses and comparisons, only the permanent population is taken into account. In connection with the war in Ukraine, it has become apparent that the number of people with Ukrainian citizenship in the resident population has risen in many European countries since 2022. This was not observed in Liechtenstein, as these people are counted as part of the non-permanent population. In order to increase the international comparability of Liechtenstein's population figures, the Office of Statistics is adjusting the definition of the permanent population.
