Data Protection goes Cinema

For the third time, the Data Protection Authority is organizing a cinema evening followed by a panel discussion, this time again at SKINO in Schaan, on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, at 5.00 pm (doors open at 4.30 pm), on the topic:

Identity theft: You may have nothing to hide, but you have something to lose - your identity

The action thriller THE NET by Irwin Winkler (114 min, USA 1995) will be shown.

A lonely computer expert played by Sandra Bullock comes into possession of a mysterious diskette at
. When she begins to investigate and stumbles upon a large-scale criminal coup, she is pursued and becomes the victim of a perfidious identity theft.

Although the film was made in 1995, the dangers of the Internet it depicts are still relevant today. In particular, the argument often heard in data protection that there is nothing to hide shows that the sensitivity of identity data and the real risk of its misuse are repeatedly underestimated.

The panel will be followed by a discussion:

  • Tina Groll, journalist, expert on identity theft and cybercrime
  • Bruno Gstöhl and Robert Lins, National Police
  • Marie-Louise Gächter, Head of the Data Protection Authority

Tina Groll will begin by talking about her personal experience with identity theft. In addition to the dangers and unpleasant consequences of such incidents, the panel will then discuss questions such as: What are the most common manifestations of identity theft or identity misuse? How can I protect myself against it? What can I do if it has happened and how do I proceed? What criminal and civil law issues arise? And last but not least: where does data protection come into play in all of this and how can I assert and enforce my rights as a data subject to rectification and erasure?

At the end of the panel discussion, the Data Protection Authority invites you to an aperitif.

Admission and registration: Admission is free and there is free seating. However, registration is required via the Data Protection Authority's website.
